TRUE 1st Print 1977 D&D Box Set Artist's Copy
David C. Sutherland's Complimentary Artist's Copy of the TRUE 1st Print, 1977 of TSR's D&D Basic Set
The box bears the old Lizard colophon of TSR, "*TM Reg. applied for" under Dungeons and Dragons title, and the product code F 115-R. It is 100% complete with original contents, including Rulebook (F 116-R), original set of 5 multi-colored dice, Monster and Treasure Assortment Set One: Levels One-Three (F1006; Lizard Colophon, 1977), and Dungeon Geomorphs Set One: Basic Dungeon (F1002; Lizard Colophon, 1976).
The upper box is in GOOD condition (see NOTES ON CONDITION below) with very, very little dishing, only tiny, hard to see creases in the lower left corner, a 2" crease/flaw from the printers in the upper right corner, some small scuffs along the edges, and a slight sun fading of the left side of the lid. The box top is in incredible shape, all four corners ae solid and show very, very little or no wear at all! The bottom tray has no dishing and other than very faint yellowing looks like new. However, one corner has been pushed-in slightly resulting in a crease (1") and tear near the edge and corner. Because of it's location, and that it does not go into the box, it is unlikely to be noticed. The rulebook is in GOOD condition with a few very light, minor stains on the front cover. The back cover is blank (as it should be for a 1st print) but has some light staining to it. The interior is absolutely free of any marks and has only minor creases from flipping pages. Most important: the perforated reference sheet in the back is unpunched. The original set of 5 multi-colored dice are all here loose in the box and worn from use (by Dave Sutherland!). The Monster and Treasure Assortment and Dungeon Geomorphs sets are in FINE(-) shape with no marks whatsoever.
This set was given to David as a complimentary copy for the artwork he did, including the iconic, full color painting on the box and front cover of the rulebook.
This set is the first attempt to make a "basic" introductory set of rules. Taking from the original 1974 Dungeons and Dragons boxed set and later supplements by Gary Gygax and crew, the rules booklet provides a simpler version of the game and the dread sample dungeon of Zenopus!
This set is a must have as a milestone for the Dungeons and Dragons game to collectors and players alike!
