This is the game of Scopa, an Italian card game that pits players in a gambit to collect certain cards to gain the most points.

It is likely that Gary picked up this card game while attending ModCon99 in Modena, Italy in 1999. The game bears some attributes of his Empire game from the Gord the Rogue novels.
